Haryana Reiterates Claim over Satluj-Yamuna Link Canal

Punjab Water:dateline:Going against international riparian rules and river basin principle, Haryana Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar reiterated demand of more share of Punjabs river water through controversial Satluj-Yamuna Link Canal.

In a statement, Khattar said that Haryana government was making serious efforts to ensure more share for the state of water of Satluj River which passes through Punjab. He said that he took up the issue with union minister Uma Bharti and urged her to resolve the issue at the earliest.

He was addressing a rally in Mahendergarh district. He said that he requested Bharti to take legal measure to pursue the case strongly assuring the attendees that south Haryana would also be provided water of Hansi-Butana canal besides that of SYL canal.

It is worth mentioning that SYL has been remaining key river-water dispute between Punjab and Haryana since 1982. Indian government has been making persistent efforts to loot more water of Punjab through this canal. Such efforts had forced Sikh youth to revolt against India violently as Punjab has no surplus water to share with neighborhood state and there is already huge shortage of water in the state.

In 2004, during regime of Capt Amrinder Singh, Punjab assembly passed Punjab Termination of Water Agreement Act to stop construction of this canal. Since then, the case is pending in Supreme Court.
