Satkar Committee Draws Flake for Thrashing Men ‘Mercilessly’

JALANDHAR, Punjab—A Satkar Committee from Gagobuha (district Jalandhar) is facing major embarrassment for uploading a video of beating up an old man and three other men ‘cruelly’ for committing sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib. The way members of the committee thrashed these men, is drawing flakes from various sections of Sikhs.

It is notable that Satkar Committees are known to be active for stopping sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib. In Punjab, some people who are unaware of the Sikh Maryada, do Parkash (installation) of Guru Granth Sahib on prohibited places like ‘Kabars’, ‘Dargahs’, ‘Jatheras’ etc. Doing so is considered desecration of Guru Granth Sahib among Sikhs. Sri Akal Takht Sahib issued ‘Hukamnama’ for stopping these incidents during the tenure of Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti as Jathedar.

In above mentioned incident, Akhand Path Sahib of Guru Granth Sahib was going on at a Jathera in village Sidhupur. Members of Satkar Committee picked the Pathis (the persons who recite Gurbani) who are doing Akhand Path Sahib, and started beating them including an old man, mercilessly. Video of the incident was uploaded on social media. Sizeable number of Sikhs have criticized the ‘merciless’ act of the Satkar Committee. They say that they agree to stopping sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib but beating up ‘innocent’ persons who have no other mean of employment, along with elderly persons is an ‘inhuman’ practice. They say that accused should be convinced calmly, but acting violently gives wrong message to the society.

It is worth mentioning that Satkar Committee activists also committed disrespect of turbans of ‘Pathis’. On the other hand, some supporters of Satkar Committee justify this act as it is necessary to stop disrespect of Guru Granth Sahib.

Reacting on the incident, Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti termed the Satkar Committee action as inhuman and said that no civilized society could permit anybody to decide over their own complaint. ‘Sikh religion is based on pro-human philosophy which has never accommodated such kind of acts. Rigid action should be taken against those who acted like this.”

It is also noteworthy that leading Punjabi newspaper ‘Ajit’ has published special stories on this incident its front pages.

  2. I am astounded and outraged at the atrocious behaviour by those idiots beating up that defenceless old man knocking his turban off his head, holding him down so that they could wallop him and make him plead for mercy. My blood is boiling …those arrogant, ignorant twits and that too in the name of the sikh faith how can beating up an old man be right? promote our faith in any way? Or present the world with a true reflection of what a real sikh is like ? I am a proud sikh and to see fellow Sikhs behaving in such a Neanderthal like manner and then have the gall to justify their despicable actions by calling fateh ! Our sikh gurus did not sacrifice their precious lives for such poor and animal like behaviour. I certainly will be doing my best to get this brutality addressed please can all those who have commented pass the clip on the more Sikhs who know about this and comment on the incident the more pressure there will be for the issue to be addressed effectively.

  3. its shame to beat like animal to senior Sikh all has right to perform akhand path sahib for respect of elders . I request to punish the offender seriously
They are if purely Sikhs of guru gobind singh Ji can’t do this act a Sikh beating a Sikh the right way is to convince them the fault direct them to right way if they are faulty
Be noted our present Guru Guru Granth Sahib JI is not for any only Sikh its for whole world
Hope anger will be over if such Sikh understand the banies

  4. Pritam Singh – are you serious? People like you make the world a dangerous place to live in and make Sikhi inaccessible. Since when does ‘mercifully’ beating up someone make them understand your point any better.

If this is still beyond your comprehension, ISIS are recruiting and may just have a spot for you.

  5. It’s just unbelievable. Guru Nanak didn’t teach us this violent behavior. They had no right to do so. It’s just inhuman. Solid actions should need to take against these pricks. We are not Taliban or ISi. These pricks put our heads down.

  6. Guru Fateh jio,
As a Gursikh, I find this practice the ultimate in thuggery. This is no education process. The word of our great faith “Sikh” means to learn. Is this how you teach? The editors of Sikh24 need to put a strongly worded editorial out stating that this thuggish behavior has no place in Sikh affairs. This is no way to teach respect…this only shows the deviancy and arrogance of a few who think they are better Sikhs. I am confident that if the lives of each of the Sikhs involved in beating up innocent preachers were examined closely, one could identify times in their lives when they may not have practiced Sikhi in accordance with the Rehat Maryada.

  7. Waheguru ji ka khalsa Waheguru ji ki fateh. Baba ji Tusi eh kamm karke bahot Vadiya Kitta hai baba ji Apna mobile number send karyo mainu Sadde ayithe v ne kochh edda de babble PlZ baba ji

  8. They weren’t “mercilessly” beating them. The 3 accused “granthis” knew what they were doing and knew what they deserved and actually took the punishment in a true fashion. Now if they go and continue beaadbi then they didn’t learn their lesson, but that I can see they look like they will never do it again.

    • is this sikhism? Are those Only “granthis” , not singh?
Granthi sahib who recite gurbani… they werent three only!!!! only two less to be panch pyaree? puran guru? three saroop of khalsa???? “khalsa meero roop hai khass”-Guru Gobind singh ji. Was there any hukumnama taken by the benched singh sahibans ????? this is the act of extreme brutality and definately out of sikh idiology. is there any difference left between mugals kaazzi’s and satkar commette. Where are the sikh who protect needy and poor?? Granthi singh only earn Rs 300 to 500 from one akandh path, who will pay for their medical expences for damage done on them.

    • pritam singh ji yes they were not merciless but ki tuc eh manoge k una ne una pathi singha d pugg te thpd maare una d pugg hwa ch uda ditti…..n veer ji apne te vde te hth chukna isnt a good deed n ina ne ik buzurg pathi singh nu kida sotiya naal kutteya n tuc ina nu justify kr reh o

    • I think you should recite the Guru Gobind singh one verses.

Rehni rahe sohi sikh mera, mein us ka sahib voh mera chera . Joh chale vpiran ke reet mein na karu un ki parteet.

So mr singh remember do try to become talianani. Learn something from Guru Amardass

    • This punishment is inhumane and is not approved by Guru Granth Sahib ji. What message are you and these people giving to the world about Sikhism? None of our 10 Gurus and Guru Granth Sahib ji teach their followers to mercilessly beat elderly, or any being for that reason. Don’t you think the actual beadbi happens when you bend and go against what is taught and preached by the Gurus rather than practicing the rituals that are made by us? And Sikhism does not even support any rituals or this kind of extreme behaviour towards anybody. These so called caretakers of Guru Granth Sahib ji should first themselves learn about the preachings of the holy book and get rid of all the fake rituals they practice themselves. Guru Nanak Dev Ji once said that God is present everywhere. There is no one direction in which he can put his feet which will not point towards God. Why are the preachings of our Guru not being followed then? If these priests did something that went against the preachings of the Gurus, then sitting down and talking it out with them might have been a better option. At least respect for their age and their place within the religion should be considered before treating them like this. On top of this punishment, they disrespected their turbans, the ultimate sign of Sikhi. These people beating the priests are not even worth being called Sikhs. If this is the respect they are going to show to the turbans themselves, don’t expect people from other religions and ethnicities to respect it either. It all begins at home and from within. I hope that the doers of this act are punished in this life and in their next journey. It is shameful to see that the caretakers of the religion are doing things like this. May God bless those who had to bear the pain of this act and may they receive the justice they deserve for this kind of acts of brutality.

    • Shame on you Pritam Singh and shame on your thought process. who gave you the authority to judge anyone? I can bet even our gurus would have spared them this humiliation.

    • Pritam Singh – you are just a vile horrible little man no different to the thugs who carried out those beatings. You pretence of being a good Sikh is a disgrace to the wonderful Sikh religion. There is always a place for likes of you in ISIS, where you will be most welcomed.
