Op/Ed: Akalis Protest in Delhi; But Continue Injustices Against Sikhs in Punjab

2015_03_26-akali_dal_injustice—Following CBI’s clean chit to Jagdish Tytler in 1984 Sikh genocide cases, the Akali Dal and Delhi Shiromani Gurdwara Management Committee held a protest yesterday.  Protesters were dispersed by the Delhi Police, using water cannons as the protesters tried to break the security barrier to reach the CBI office.

Protesters raised slogans against the CBI, as well as the Congress, while raising objection to the confidential and secret clean chit to Jagdish Tytler three months ago.

BJP and Akali Dal Responsible for Clean Chit to Congress: HS Phoolka

It is important to note that Senior Advocate HS Phoolka has alleged that Tytler was given a clean chit with cooperation of the Bhartiya Janta Party, the ally of Akali Dal Badal.  He alleged that it was a conspiracy at the Central level to ensure the Sikh community does not receive justice.

“The Akali Dal and the Gurdwara Committee were aware of it and even they did not inform the people. When Jagadish Tytler was given a clean-chit in 2009 during the UPA Government, the Akali Dal and the BJP raised such a hue and cry in the Parliament that the house had to be adjourned,” Phoolka said earlier.

Badal Government Continues To Block Protests in Punjab

Meanwhile as the protest took place in New Delhi, the same Government has continued to block protests by Sikhs in favour of release of Sikh political prisoners.

Earlier today, under instructions of the Punjab Police, Chandigarh administration did not allow a protest to take place in Sector 17, Chandigarh.  Protesters were given a strict warning to leave and launch the protest elsewhere, or face arrests.  Similarly, the Punjab Government has barred multiple “Vangar Marches” in favour of Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa, who, along with his son, has been illegally detained by the Punjab Police.  Just two days ago, police crushed a protest march in Bathinda without a reason.

While in Delhi, the Shiromani Akali Dal is trying to upkeep its “Panthik image”, in Punjab itself, it is responsible for grave injustices to the Sikh community.  Why is Akali Dal complaining about clean chit to Tytler when it has continued to safe guard the likes of Sumedh Saini, who killed 1000s of Sikhs in fake encounters?
