Petition filed in Delhi HC to remove ban on BBC documentary

2015-03-05_india_daughter:dateline:A petition was filed in Delhi High Court seeking to lift the ban showing the BBC documentary in India, interviewing one of those convicted in the horrific December 16, 2012 gang rape in the national capital.

I had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court Registry today around 1630 hrs, confirming this to UNI, the petitioner, Vibhor Anand, a Delhi based lawyer, said the people of India should see the British documentary on the brutal gangrape on Nirbhaya.

The petition is most likely to come before the Delhi High Court division bench comprising Chief Justice G Rohini and another Judge on Tuesday, Mr Anand further clarified to UNI.

The main portion of the petition, which the UNI got access through e-mail, said the BBC documentary neither defame India nor the victim or her family in any way.

The documentary would give a right message in India about the mindset of its people. The mindset should change and people should respect women. The documentary was not anti-women rather its telecast would raise an awareness of global problem, Mr Anand told UNI over phone.

He further said within 24 hrs, more than 2 lakh viewers watched the BBC documentary before Youtube removed the film from its server which itself proved that public at large wanted to see the truth behind the entire documentary.

The BBC documentary had created a furore in India as it had been reported that the documentary, which interviewed one of the convicts Mukesh Singh, pointed out that how a girl in India should dress in public and how the victim Nirbhaya was responsible for the brutal gangrape incident.

Mr Anand is the son of VK Anand, Defence lawyer of convict Mukesh.
