Haryana to Move Supreme Court To Get Water from Punjab

SYL:dateline:The BJP government of Haryana has decided to move Supreme Court of India against Punjab Termination of Water Agreement Act-2004 passed by Punjab Assembly in order save remaining water of Punjabs rivers during the rule ofChief MinisterCapt. Amrinder Singh.

The Act was passed with the initiative of the then Punjab chief minister Capt Amrinder Singh on July 12, 2004 and Indian establishment and main stream media criticized him, turning it as issue of national integration. The Act has annulled all inter-state agreements signed by Punjab on sharing the waters of the Ravi and the Beas.

On July 22, 2004, the Government of India sought the Supreme Courts opinion on the validity of the Termination of Agreements Act through a Presidential reference under Section 143 of the Constitution.

Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar said that their government wanted to get its share of water from Punjab through SYL canal and hearing of this case should not be delayed much and should be held at the earliest. We will also ask the apex court to expedite its decision on the Presidential reference, Khattar said.
