Shopkeeper Jailed for Bullets and Drug Farm at Glasgow Home

2015-01-29- parmdeep singhGLASGOW, Scotland—A 34-year-old man who was caught with 825 rounds of ammunition and a cannabis farm at his Renfrewshire home has been jailed for eight-and-a-half years.

Bodybuilder Parmdeep Singh’s house in Langbank was raided on 10 June 2012 by police investigating the theft of gym equipment in the north of England.

Officers found a shotgun, bullets for Kalashnikov machine guns and a £1.5m-capacity cannabis farm.

Sing admitted possessing a firearm and ammunition and producing illegal drugs.

He pleaded guilty to the offences during a hearing at Paisley Sheriff Court in November.

His case was sent to the High Court in Edinburgh after the sheriff decided his sentencing powers were not adequate to cover the seriousness of the offences.

Jailing him, judge Lord Glennie told Singh that he had to go to jail.

He added: “You stored ammunition for military grade weapons and cultivated drugs. The most appropriate sentence available to me for such serious offences is the imposition of custody.”

At previous proceedings, the court heard how Singh’s criminal operation came to light during a separate police probe into the theft of gym equipment from a health club in Morpeth, Northumberland.

Singh was thought to have moved and stored the equipment at his home.

When detectives raided his home they found a shotgun hidden under a sheet in his bedroom cupboard and 825 bullets hidden around the property.

The cannabis factory was in a purpose-built windowless outhouse in the grounds of Singh’s home.

He had spent £30,000 on equipment to grow the drug and fitted an elaborate fan system to mask the pungent smell of the plants from visitors.

Police concluded the cannabis farm was capable of producing £1.5m of the drug annually and the operation was one of the most profitable that they had ever discovered.

After his arrest, Singh denied the charges for more than two years until he went on trial at Paisley Sheriff Court.

He initially blamed a cousin now living in India but pleaded guilty after a jury heard a recording of an interview with detectives where he admitted the drugs, gun and ammunition stashes were his.
