Minorities Commission Members to Meet Sikh Farmers Assaulted in Gujrat

2015-01-27- farmersNEW DELHI, India—Concerning the attacks of Sikh farmers in Gujarat, members of the National Commission for Minorities have decided to visit Gujarat to address the problems being faced by the victims.

Dozens of Sikh farmers were assaulted at Loria village near Bhuj by the locals who are reportedly associated to the ruling party. Some of them had sustained serious injuries.

Talking to media persons, Ajaib Singh, member of the commission, said he would reach Ahmedabad on February 1 and meet the officials concerned including Gujarat Chief Secretary.

He said he would subsequently visit Bhuj where Sikh farmers had been living for the past several decades.

As per sources, none of those behind the attack had been arrested nor booked so far. It has been alleged that the Gujarat Police are instead favouring the accused.

The Punjab Congress President Partap Singh Bajwa has strongly condemned the inaction of the Gujarat government to protect the Sikh farmers settled in that state from the land mafia which had renewed efforts to uproot them in league with the administration. He slammed the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Badal as well for turning a deaf ear to this longstanding problem of the farmers there.
