:dateline:Shiromani Akali Dal Badal has taken a U-turn over the motive of the anti-drug campaign. Akali Dal has totally changed the plan and motive of the protests to be conducted on border stations. Now, the motive of the protests is not to oppose the Border Security Force, but tomake people aware ofthe drug smuggling going on through the Indo-Pak Border. Ministers of Akali Dal will now participate in this campaign through their personal conveyance. Now, the protests will not be done on 4 border stations, instead on three border stations, namely Attari, Hussainiwala and Sadki Chowki.
President of Shiromani Akali Dal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal will lead the protest on Attari border station. During a meeting, every District President was asked to provide 5 to 10 buses for carrying workers to border stations. A target of gathering 25-30000 akali workers has been made for every border station. Patronage of Shiromani Akali Dal and Chief Minister of Punjab S. Parkash Singh Badal said that our party doesnt oppose the Centre or Border Security Force. S. Badal said that to stop drug smuggling from Pakistan, modern technological equipment can be used on the border. He said that Akali Dal is fighting against the drug smuggling, but it is very sad that Punjab is being preached in anegative sense, labelled as adrug hub.
Spokespersons of Shiromani Akali Dal Dr. daljit Singh Cheema and S. Maheshinder Singh Grewal said that these protests are being done to aware the people about drug smuggling and the need to increase intelligence on border to stop drug smuggling. Senior Akali Leader and former Member Parliament S. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Member Parliament S. Balwinder Singh Bhoondarh, and Cabinet Minister Jathedar Tota Singh also addressed during the meeting.
It is bit too late to wake up to this ‘rude call’ after the event, when irreparable damage was done by incumbent Akali Govt.
Only an alternative party to AKALI and BJP nexus endemic corruption and spiralling demise of Punjab may be salvaged, in my considered opinion.
