:dateline:While Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa is campaigning for the release of Sikh political prisoners who have completed their jail terms, Manjit Singh GK (President of DSGMC), has also sought parole for these Singhs. In a letter written to theMinistry of law and justice for the Government of India, GK requested that these Sikhs must be releasedas they have completed their terms.

A large number of Sikhs who have completed their jail terms years ago, are still languishing in the jails. Sadly, these Sikhs are also denied the right to get parole to attend deaths and weddings of their close family members, stated GK. The letter was sent toD.V. Sadananda Gowda, Minister of Law and Justice, Government of India.

People of different religions and communities need to be treated at-par at time of justice delivery and discrimination of Sikhs in the judicial system should be stopped and flaws in the judicial system be plugged by way of amendments if required, he wrote.

It is not known if GK’s statement has come due to the campaign started by Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa in Haryana, however a similar statement was made by Akali MP Prem S Chandumajra in the Lok Sabha. Chandumajra stated that Sikhs who have completed their terms must be released.

Interestingly, while Sikhs are denied release, a parole was granted to Balwan Khokhar, a convict in the anti-Sikh genocide of 1984. Khokhar was released merely 18 months after he was convicted.

Previously, GK promised an SIT court for 1984 Sikh genocide cases, however despite the Bhartiya Janta Party coming to power in Centre, GK has not fulfilled his promise. AlthoughAkali leaders are asking for release of Sikhs, the Punjab State Government has remained quiet over the issue. The Badals have not done anything despite being approached byBhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa before re-starting his hunger strike.

Similar to Manjit Singh GK,Chandumajra is senior leader of the Akali Dal. The same political party is responsible for releasing police cat Gurmeet Pinky despite him being convicted in a murder case.
