LUDHIANA, Punjab—Bhai Makhan Singh Gill, who was arrested by Uttar Pradesh police in Gorakhpur on October 23, 2010, was acquitted by the court of judicial magistrate Harjinder Singh in a false case of burglary.

Bhai Makhan Singh, son of S. Diwan Singh, belongs to village Nurpur Jattan, district Hoshiarpur.  He was charged by Machhiwada Police on November 5, 2009, for allegedly carrying explosives. The explosives were implanted by the police and later seized near Neelon canal.

Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur, human rights activist, who provided legal assistance to the case stated that the police framed another robbery case in 2010 to keep him detained.  While the the case of carrying explosives is still pending in additional Sessions Court Ludhiana, he has been acquitted in other cases that were fabricated.
