NEW DELHI—Bapu Assa Singh, an elderly Gursikh aged 96 year old has been finally granted bail by the Supreme Court of India.

As per a statement by the Sikh Channel UK, “On November 20, 2012 a designated TADA court convicted Bapu Assa Singh for the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA) for recovery of cash shown against him by the prosecution, and they sentenced him to 10 years of imprisonment. Bapu Assa Singh has been serving his sentence in the Central Jail of Hoshiarpur. His appeal was moved in the Supreme Court of India within a legal time frame but is still pending for a hearing. The Supreme Court Of India took a long time to decide his bail plea.”

Sikh Channel UK further shared a video of Bapu ji after his release, showing him barely able to walk on his own.

“Dr Assa Singh could barely walk without support, as he stood on trial accused of a 25 year old bank robbery case in which he allegedly handled the stolen money from a Ludhiana branch of Punjab National Bank in February 1987. The case was full of flaws and lacked any evidence which was conveniently overlooked by Judge Sunil Kumar Arora.”
