SMETHWICK, UK—The UK Sikh community grieves the loss of a Sikh leader. Daljit Singh Shergill, former chairman of the first Gurdwara in the UK, Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Smethwick, passed away in his sleep at 8pm.
Mr Shergill had dedicated much of his life to selfless service of the Sikh community, leading the Management Committee of Guru Nanak Gurdwara for 25 years. Speaking to a BBC interviewer, he is quoted to have said, “We didn’t just build a landmark Gurdwara Sahib, but a community for our next generation to come to.”
Mr Shergill’s funeral will take place next week, and sangat from near and far are expected to arrive to share their condolences.
