Sikh Youth Federation Raises Awareness at Canadian Parliament

SYFOTTAWA, Canada—Sikh volunteers from the Sikh Youth Federation held an event in celebration of Sikh Awareness. The Sikh Youth Federation held this event in the heart of Canada’s capital on the steps of the Parliament Hill with various organized activities for everyone.

Tim Uppal, the Minister of State for Multiculturalism, attended and participated in the event held by the Sikh Youth Federation and also ate Langar (free kitchen). “I would like to thank the many young Sikh volunteers from the Sikh Youth Federation for their work to make this day possible, this is a wonderful opportunity for Canadians of all faiths and backgrounds to come together and learn about their Sikh neighbors. In Canada, our diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and it is events such as this which help to foster and enhance a greater understanding of our different cultures,” said Tim Uppal. Langar was distributed to all who attended the event which also included the likes of Ministers, members of the Conservative Government, and members of Parliament from all parties.

One of the main points that the Sikh Youth Federation wanted to emphasize on was the concept of Langar. They wanted to share how Langar symbolizes equality of all culturals and people as everyone sits on the floor together to eat a vegetarian meal regardless of background. People who attended the event were also given the opportunity to have a Keskie (Turban) tied on them.
