JAMMU, India—Tens of thousands of people have been left stranded in Indian-administered Kashmir after the area saw the worst floods in half a century. With road and communication links cut off, there is death and destruction all round.
As the death toll nears the 500 mark, a single tragic incident claimed the lives of over 60 Sikhs who were travelling in a wedding procession, after their bus fell into the swollen Jhameerh Nullah near Nowshera in Kashmir. The groom, 24 year old Sukhvinder Singh, was among the dead as well as many children, one was only 10 months old.
Sikh Relief has set up aid operations in Jammu & Kashmir, in keeping with the advice of the Indian Army. Immediate needs are for dry rations, baby food, warm clothing and most importantly medicine – due to the threat of disease from the infected waters. Sikh Relief team has come face to face with a truly disturbing scene and the need for help is not only real but immense.
