Humanitarian Aid Provided by SGPC to Sikhs and Non-Sikhs Alike in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, India—The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the supreme Sikh body, has made special arrangements to provide support to flood-affected people of Jammu and Kashmir. Till now, more than 120,000 kilograms of food and other relief supplies have been sent by air, while a relief camp has been set up in Srinagar.

Jathedar Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, general secretary of SGPC, said that till Wednesday, food supplies and relief materials have been airlifted to Kashmir from Amritsar. He said that relief camps have been established at three places in Kashmir, including Gurdwara 6th Patshahi, Srinagar and Gurdwara Shaheed Bunga Badgam.

He said that the Army and other aid agencies were bringing many of the rescued people to the relief camps being run by the SGPC. The SGPC has also sent two teams of volunteers to Jammu and Kashmir for launching further relief operations.

While speaking to the press, Bhaur said, “We are distributing food through langars (community kitchens) to the affected people of valley, who are suffering from worst natural disaster. We have despatched food material including rice, cooking oil, cereals, sugar, ghee, salt, tea and other essential items,” adding, “blankets had also been sent. The relief material will be sent on daily basis till normalcy is restored in the valley.”

On Tuesday, The apex religious body of Sikhs, had sent its first installment of the flood-relief material by air to the summer capital of the state.
