Narain Singh Chaura Sentenced to Two Years in Fabricated Case

2014-08-04-chauraCHANDIGARH, INDIA—The Chandigarh court of Magistrate, Jasvinder Singh, has sentenced Narain Singh Chaura to 2 years in prison, in a false case which alleges Narain Singh was caught in the possession of illegal arms in Sector 51 Chandigarh.

Narain Singh Chaura is a well respected and highly educated Human Rights advocate, whose experience and understanding of Punjab’s situation make him an exemplary leader. However, as is often the case in India, his voice has been silenced by locking him up and burying him under many false cases.

This sentence of 2 years has been declared ‘undergone’ as Narain Singh has served more than 2 years in prison already. It is worth noting that Narain Singh remains in Amritsar Jail where Sikh Organisation for Prisoner Welfare (SOPW) are helping him to clear his name in the other pending cases against him.

Elsewhere, Harminder Singh, Dharminder Singh and Gurvinder Singh, all aged between 26 and 27, have been handed down very heavy sentences for an attempted assault on the highly controversial cult leader Piara Bhaniara. As well as 10 years in prison they have been ordered to pay a fine of 11,000 Rs each. Bhaniara suffered injuries to his head, nose and ear and his attackers were tussled to the ground by the CRPF, as they tried to make their escape.
