CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Punjabi folk singer and lyricists Raj Kakra’s debut Punjabi film “Kaum De Heere” will be released on August 22 this year in India. The film is based on true life events of Shaheed Satwant Singh and Beant Singh after the attack on Sri Darbar Sahib in 1984. The film was released internationally but faced a ban by the Censor Board of India which delayed its release in the country.
Raj Kakra had earlier stated, “To make Sikh nation aware of its splendid history, various efforts are being made and our effort in form of film production is also falls in this category. Rather we hope that our film will prove as milestone in this direction.” He said that the film is dedicated to martyrdom of Shaheed Bhai Satwant Singh Agwan, Bhai Beant Singh and Bhai Kehar Singh.
Raj Kakra is playing the role of Shaheed Beant Singh in this movie. Kakra travelled abroad to promote the movie in different countries. It was well received in a number of countries however some scenes felt short of expectations.
Although the movie did a splendid job at depicting the tragedies, some of the scenes were unreal, including the assassination plot of Indira Gandhi, as well as the visit to Harmandir Sahib before the plot was carried out. In addition, not much emphasis is laid upon spiritual aspect of the Sikh religion, and the main actors have been shown to retaliate in sheer anger over the 1984 Darbar Sahib invasion by Indian Army. Display of dead bodies after being hung should have also been avoided, or limited to shorter duration.
