Akalis Hold Protest To Oppose Separate Haryana Gurdwara Committee

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Furious over the issue of separate SGPC for Haryana, the youth wing of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today launched a statewide agitation against the Bill passed by the state government and burnt effigies of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Finance Minister Harmohinder Singh Chattha at committee chowk here.

Protesters also raised slogans against the state Congress government and demanded the rollback of the Bill.

Surinder Pal Ramgaria, president of the youth SAD, and Ravi Virk, a youth leader, led the protest and accused Congress and Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (HSGPC) leaders of “harming the interests of Sikhs” by dividing them on the issue of separate committee.

They said: “The Congress is about to depart from Haryana and will not return after the Assembly elections. Before leaving, Congress leaders are misleading the community members and the CM has played a divide-and-rule card, which will be harmful for society.” Virk said party workers would continue to agitate across the state. Meanwhile, a delegation of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) today met the Haryana Governor and demanded to interfere in the matter to maintain harmony among the community members.Raghujit Singh Virk, senior vice-president of the SGPC, today met the Governor under the leadership of SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar and demanded that the Bill be repealed.
