:dateline:In a press note published from the SGPC office at Darbar Sahib, Sri Amritsar, Daljeet Singh Bedi has appreciated the ongoing efforts by SALDEF to raise awareness of Sikh identity in the United States of America. Bedi held that the efforts by Waris Ahluwalia were commendable and would help raise awareness of Sikh identity worldwide.
Bedi stated that Sikhs were being targeted because of their appearance in Western countries, despite the fact that the community is contributing to the society in various forms. He said it was sad that Sikhs had to face discrimination at airports, and other places because of their appearance.
He also appealed to Sikhs living worldwide to support these kind of efforts, so people living in the West could be made aware of Sikh identityand its value.
The SALDEF ad has been well received in the US and will certainly help dispel misconceptions that people have about Sikhs. While Sikhs living in West are working hard to raise awareness of Sikh identity, the SGPC and Sikhs in Punjab also need to initiate similar efforts to eradicate stereotypes there.
