Coincidental Release of Punjabi Movie “Kaum De Heere” After “Punjab 1984” Might Be Well Received

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Finally as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has lifted ban from the Punjabi film “Kaum De Heere”, it will be released next month, on August 22, across India.  Kaum De Heere is based on true incidents that happened after 1984 attack on Darbar Sahib.  It is debut Punjabi movie of lyricist-cum-singer Raj Kakra.

Coincidentally, Kaum De Heere is going to be released after the “Punjab 1984” film starring Diljit Dosanjh, which was released last month.   Although Kaum De Heere was completed much earlier, it might help fill gaps that others found with Punjab 1984.  Kaum De Heere addresses the attack on Sri Darbar Sahib more in depth, as compared to Punjab 1984.   Although Kaum De Heere may not do as well as Punjab 1984, it will certainly benefit from curiosity that was created after the ban imposed by CBFC.

The movie was banned in India on February 28, 2014 and CBFC demanded alterations.  What alterations have been made is yet to be seen.

This movie is based on Sikh martyrs Bhai Beant Singh, Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh. Bhai Beant Singh and Satwant Singh who were bodyguards of the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, penalized later for attacking Sri Darbar Sahib by assassinating her on 31 October 1984.

As posted earlier by Sikh24, although the movie did a splendid job at depicting the tragedies, some of the scenes were unreal, including the assassination plot of Indira Gandhi, as well as the visit to Harmandir Sahib before the plot was carried out.  In addition, not much emphasis is laid upon spiritual aspect of the Sikh religion, and the main actors have been shown to retaliate in sheer anger over the 1984 Darbar Sahib invasion by Indian Army.  Display of dead bodies after being hung should have also been avoided, or limited to shorter duration.
