NEW DELHI—To curb growing demand for a separate Gurdwara Committee in Haryana, a delegation of SGPC members led by its President, Avtar Makkar, met with Rajnath Singh.  Makkar requested Rajnath Singh, Union Minister of Home Affairs, to intervene in the matter and stop formation of a separate Gurdwara Committee in Haryana.

Makkar has alleged that the Congress Government in Haryana was interfering in matters of Sikhs and this should not be allowed.  He blamed the Hooda Government for trying to split the Sikhs to win votes.  He said that the SGPC had come into being after great sacrifices by the Sikhs in 1920’s.

SGPC currently manages all affairs of Gurdwaras in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh and Haryana.  It will lose control of Gurdwaras and other Sikh institutions in Haryana if a separate committee is formed there.

Makkar was accompanied by various other SGPC members, including Dalmegh Singh.

Earlier, Punjabi Chief Minister, Parkash Badal had also met with Rajnath Singh over the same matter.
