At a Members Debate in the Scottish Parliament, Sandra White MSP moved motion S4M-10022 in support of the Sikh communitys call for an independent public inquiry into the 1984 massacre.

The motion which was supported on a cross-party basis, noted the sadness of the events of the 1984 attack on the Golden Temple which led to the death of thousands of innocent women, men and children.

The key demand was for the UK Government to disclose the full facts of their foreknowledge and involvement in the planning of the devastating military operation.

External Affairs Minister, Humza Yousaf, responding on behalf of the Government, said:

1984 will never be forgotten, it never can be forgotten. You have from me, my government, the First Minister and my party, 100% unequivocal commitment that we will continue to push the UK for an independent public inquiry into the events of 1984. I will bring this issue to the attention of Foreign Secretary William Hague when we next meet.

Surinder Singh, president of The Glasgow Gurdwara said:

Today we are one step closer to uncovering the truth about 1984. The devastating carnage wreaked upon the Sikhs is the hidden holocaust of the 20th century. Securing the support of the Scottish Government is reassuring and it is now incumbent on the British Government to respond to this demand of the Sikh community. We will continue the campaign to realise the truth about 1984.
