AMBALA, Haryana, India—Representatives of several Sikh organizations arrived at Shalimar Bagh Gurdwara to attend the conclusion of an Akhand Paath (uninterrupted reading) held at the Gurdwara following the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib on Tuesday, May 18, 2014. An atonement prayer meeting was also held.

Sikh leaders demanded strict action against the miscreants and formed an 11-member committee to put pressure on the administration to nab the culprits. They had previously demanded the arrest of the culprits within 72 hours of the incident.

In a complaint lodged with the police, Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Manjit Singh alleged that, when the morning sewadar Gurpreet Singh came to the gurdwara, he found the locks of the gurdwara broken. The Guru Granth Sahib and gutkas (prayer books) were missing from the place. Singh alleged that after a search, the Guru Granth Sahib and gutkas were found dumped in a garbage bin at some distance away from the gurdwara. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member Harpal Singh Palli said police had been asked to round up the suspects by Thursday as resentment in the community was mounting up.
