:dateline:Punjab and Haryana high court on Thursday, May 1, 2014 refused to entertain a petition for “blanket bail” by former Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) of prisons, Shashi Kant Sharma. The former DGP lodged the plea apprehensive of possible arrest in some criminal cases brought about by the state police.

While hearing the petition, Justice Tejinder Singh Dhindsa directed Shashi Kant’s lawyer to provide the court certain examples in which he may be arrested. But lawyer failed to give any specific instance. In view of this, he offered to withdraw the petition, following which his petition was “dismissed as withdrawn”.

In his petition, Kant had described that ruling politicians and others are not happy with his crusade against drug racket in Punjab and subsequent disclosures. He also alleged that on January 10, 2014 that Punjab police made an attempt to kidnap him, and that a daily diary report was registered in this regard by Chandigarh police.

Shashi Kant is apprehensive because the political leaders recently named by him for their involvement in drug racketing, are powerful people who can pull strings to harm him.

Shashi Kant had requested from the court that directives should be issued to the Punjab police with instructions to issue him 15-day prior notice before registering any case against him.
