Punjab Voting Turnout (73%) Does Not Meet Expectations of ECI

30GWLSTT02CHANDIGARH, Punjab— Punjab has recorded 73 percent voter turnout today, as per the latest information available with Sikh24.com, which is 3 percent more than previous Lok Sabha elections held in 2009. However, it did not meet the expectations of the Election Commission of India (ECI) who expected a turnout of 80 percent as it carried out an unprecedented campaign across the country to create awareness among citizens about their right to vot,e and encouraged them to use that right.

30GWLSTT001Sangrur constituency voting turnout outdid the rest of Punjab constituencies which is good news for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Bhagwant Mann.

Constituency details of voting percentage recorded until 5.00 P.M. (IST) are as follows:

1. Gurdaspur 61.22%
2. Amritsar 60%
3. khadoor sahib 63%
4. Jalandhar 60%
5. Hoshiarpur 54%
6. Anandpur Sahib 63%
7. Ludhiana 64%
8. Fatehgarh Sahib 63%
9. Faridkot 62.12%
10. Ferozpur 65%
11. Bathinda 67%
12. Sangrur 68.9%
13. Patiala 65%

Briefing the media at 7:00 PM, Punjab Chief Election Officer (CEO) Mr. V.K. Singh said that voting was continuing still at various polling locations  and that people standing in queues at 6:00 PM would be given an opportunity to exercise their franchise.

 He said that as per initial data collected by ECI, the voting percentage was at 68% and expected to cross 73% with finalization of data by late night. He said that enthusiastic polling was witnessed in Sangrur, Patiala, and Bathinda whereas moderate polling was witnessed in Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur.
