:dateline:In celebration of the City of Brampton declaring April as Sikh Heritage Month, Jagmeet Singh, MPP for Bramalea-Gore-Malton, Vicky Dhillon, Brampton City Councillor for Wards 9 and 10, and in partnership with the Canadian Sikh Association, a reception to mark Sikh Heritage Month will take place tomorrow evening Friday April 25,2014.

MPP Singh introduced the Bill in the Ontario Legislature, calling on the month of April to be recognized as Sikh Heritage Month and was officially passed in December. Now the City of Brampton has passed a similar motion, and Sikh Heritage Month will be recognized by the City.

Sikh Canadians have lived in Ontario since the middle of the 20th century, said Singh. They represent a growing, and dynamic, population. Sikh Canadians have made significant contributions to the growth and prosperity of Ontario, and thats what were celebrating this month.

April is an important month for the Sikh community. In this month, Sikh Canadians will celebrate Vaisakhi, which marks the creation of the Khalsa, and [wearing of] the Sikh articles of faith. Sikh Canadians widely celebrate Vaisakhi, also known as Khalsa Day, across Ontario.

By proclaiming the month of April as Sikh Heritage Month, both the Province of Ontario, and the City of Brampton, recognize the important contributions that Sikh Canadians have made to Ontarios social, economic, political, and cultural fabric. Sikh Heritage Month is an opportunity to remember, celebrate, and educate, future generations about Sikh Canadians, and the important role that they have played, and continue to play in communities across Ontario.
