Surrey Vasakhi Nagar Keertan Attracts 240,000 people

SURREY, BC—The annual Surrey Vasakhi Nagar Keertan attracted an estimated 240,000 people according to estimates by the RCMP and local police forces. “The number we’ve been tossing around is about 240,000,” said Surrey RCMP Sgt. Dale Carr. “A sea of heads. It was fantastic; a great, joyful day.”

The Nagar Keertan began at 9:30AM departing from Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar, making its way through the busy streets of Surrey, and returning back at the Gurdwara Sahib at around 5PM. On the way there was langar, free food made by businesses, and families alike, being served along the streets of the route.

There were many floats this year a few notable ones were the Mamta Foundation, and Never Forget 1984 floats. The Mamta foundation (http://mamtafoundationofcanada.org/) is an organization that takes care of abandoned girls in India by providing caring homes, and education for the girls.

This year 2014 will mark the 30th anniversary of the Indian Army’s attack on the Golden Temple Sri Darbar Sahib in Amritsar. To this day there has been no justice for the thousands of men, women and children who were brutally attacked and raped when the Army attacked innocent Sikhs in June 1984.

The Nagar Keertan attracted 240,000 people which is perhaps the most ever it has ever attracted making it one of the biggest outside of India.
