CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Election Commission of India (ECI), on Thursday April 3, 2014, approved the appointment of Suresh Arora as Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP), replacing the controversial figure Sumedh Saini. Mr. Arora is currently a senior Punjab Indian Police Service (IPS) officer.

The Chief Secretary of Punjab Rakesh Singh, on Wednesday, forwarded a panel of three senior most IPS officers to Election Commission of India for consideration for being appointed, or posted, as DGP of Punjab during the leave period of S.S Saini, DGP who had applied for leave with effect from April 4, 2014.

Before the ECI could realize the scope of complaints submitted by Congress party against Sumedh Saini, the DGP had decided to proceed on taking leave, which clearly meant that he thought to rescue himself from his responsibility as DGP until which time the results of elections are out.
