BATHINDA, Punjab—Residents of Prof. Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar’s native village Dialpura Bhaika and surrounding villages have welcomed the Supreme Court decision of commuting Bhullar’s death sentence to life imprisonment. After being informed about the decision, the villagers celebrated joyfully with dhol drumming.
Baba Hardeep Singh, a senior leader of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), distributed sweets among the villagers. He said efforts should now be made for Bhullar’s early release in view of his deteriorating health.
“After a very long legal struggle fought by Khalsa Panth, commutation of Bhullar’s death sentence could be made possible. Indian state has committed huge atrocities and illegitimately charged him under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) and subsequently granted him the death sentence by Indian judicial system,” he added.
