Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee Body Meets President Over 1984 Sikh Genocide

UK 1984 Akal TakhtAMRITSAR SAHIB—Demanding a thorough investigation on all the cases pertaining to 1984 Sikh Genocide, a delegation of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) met with President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, and sought to set up a Special Investigations Team (SIT) monitored by a sitting Supreme Court judge to probe the cases.

“Mass killings of Sikhs in 1984 [pogroms] have not been properly investigated, and the murderers are still roaming free, as so far no convictions have taken place,” said Manjit Singh GK, who led the delegation.

He said that the delegation comprised of DSGMC general secretary and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Manjinder Singh Sirsa, senior leaders of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Onkar Singh Thapar, Kuldeep Singh Bhogal, Ravinder Singh Khurana, and MLAs Harmeet Singh Kalka, and Jatinder Singh Shanty.

“We have also sought the President’s intervention for release of documents relevant to UK’s help sought by the Indian government during Operation Bluestar at the Golden Temple in 1984,” he said.

The DSGMC delegation also demanded setting up of minority university for Sikhs funded by the Central government and invited Pranab Mukherjee to inaugurate the Baba Baghel Singh museum at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib.

Mukherjee, in return, suggested the delegation to represent historical fact with the help of multimedia in the museum and translate poetry in Gurmukhi written by Rabindranath Tagore on Sikhs, and Sikh gurus.

The DSGMC president said that Sikhs armies had captured the Red Fort, seat of Mughals, in the year 1783, but that the government had allegedly omitted the historic feat from records. “We seek proper presentation of facts, and that the historic event of India’s victory over the invaders be given due prominence in the Red Fort,” he said.
