:dateline:On December 29, 1992, the Punjab Police unleashed their terror on 22 year old Sukhdarshan Singh from the village of Gurhey in Ludhiana. Having fought a twenty one year legal battle, yesterday his family finally saw one of the men responsible put behind bars. The other co-accused have since died, during the families lengthy struggle for justice.
Ex-Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ajit Singh along with Station House Officer (SHO) Bhag Leeha, DSP Harbhagwan Sodhi and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sawarn Ghotna, forcefully removed Sukhdarshan Singh from his family home and took him to the�Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Staff in Jagraon where he was illegally detained. The Police then proceeded to brutally torture Sukhdarshan, who was a keen sportsman, and well known kabaddi player, so much so that it led to his death while still in custody.
Sukhdarshan was the only son of Harcharan Singh and Pritam Kaur. In 1993, Harcharan Singh filed a case in the High Court against the accused for the murder of Sukhdarshan. The family also became victims of state brutality when the Police turned their attention towards them. The abuses committed against Sukhdarshan, and his family, were highlighted in a special casereport produced by the International Human Rights Organization (IHRO).
In 2002, a wrongful confinement case was registered under Section 342, voluntarily causing hurt Section 323, and death by negligence Section 304, of the Indian Penal Code. Sukhdarshan�s father sadly passed away in 2005 never having seen any form of justice for the murder of his only son. Continuing Harcharan Singh�s tireless efforts, his nephew Jaswant Singh took on the responsibility for the case.
