SINGAPORE—Surjan Singh, an 82 year old Sikh, has been honored for his outstanding volunteer service in Singapore. On Friday, February 28, 2014, the Ministry of Social and Family Development Volunteers awarded Surjan Singh, a retired teacher, for his volunteer service of 42 years. He has made a life time career of seva as a volunteer probation officer, serving in the cases of about 60 boys over the years.

“Trust is crucial,” Surjan Singh said. “You cannot succeed as a probation officer if they [the boys], or their parents don’t trust you. I stuck on with this [volunteer seva] because I believe that human beings are basically good. This is one way I can help in society.”
Surjan Singh was born in Malaysia after his parent’s arrival in the early 1930s. He is the author of two books, Saluting Sikh Soldiers of World War I & II, and Mythological and Other References in Gurbani.
