Oakville Highschooler, Rajvir Singh Kahlon, First Canadian Visible Sikh to Sign With NCAA Division 1 Men’s Soccer Team

IMG_1662-2:dateline:Among proud family, friends and classmates in attendance, 17 year old Rajvir Singh Kahlon, formally announced his acceptance to the University of Pittsburgh on a soccer scholarship this past Wednesday at the 2014 NCAA National Signing Day. National Signing Day is the first day that a high school Graduate can sign a binding National Letter of Intent (NLI) for all college sports with a school that is a member of the United States National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

The University of Pittsburgh Men�s Soccer team competes in Division 1 (D1) team in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Division 1 is the highest level of collegiate sports sanctioned under the NCAA, and the ACC is known as the most competitive and hardest conference in Division 1. The final four teams of the 2013 Men�s soccer final were from the ACC.

John Stieva, Principal of White Oaks Secondary School where Rajvir attends, hosted the National Signing day for the 17 year old soccer player where both Rajvir and Mr. Stieva signed the National Letter of Intent, formally announcing his commitment to the University of Pittsburgh Men�s Soccer team to excited supporters and well-wishers.

�Its really great to see Raj excelling at what he really loves� said John Stieva.

Rajvir’s father, Gurmit Singh Kahlon, while beaming with pride said �We have seen him work so hard since he was 3 years old. It�s an amazing feeling for our entire family, especially to go on a scholarship and that too such a well ranking University in both sports and academics�.

Erin-Mills-1-1Last year, Rajvir was selected as one of the Top 50 Players in the 2013 Keele Cup International Tournament in England and has been invited to train and trail at several distinguished soccer clubs such as West Ham (UK) and Dinamo Zagra (Croatia).

Beyond his numerous soccer distinctions, Rajvir is also completing his last year in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at White Oaks Secondary, where he is Student Council President, MVP of the school soccer team as well as a member of the basketball and football teams.

Rajvir is currently a member of the Toronto Lynx U20 team and is expected to commence his pre-season at the University of Pittsburgh in August.
