Thousands Turn Out for Sandwell Nagar Keertan

SMETHWICK, UKā€”More than 20,000 people congregated on the streets of the Black Country for a parade to celebrate the birthday of the Sikh religion’s founder. Thirty roads, including Smethwick and West Bromwich high streets were closed for Sunday’s event.

Five men in ceremonial dress led the procession in honour of Guru Nanak. They were followed by a float containing the holy scriptures of Guru Granth Sahib and a martial arts display. Onlookers flanked the parade and joined in with Langar – a traditional free community kitchen, which organisers said is an “integral part” of the celebrations. Jagjit Singh, of the Sikh Gurdwara’s Council Sandwell, said it was a “fantastic parade” with a “brilliant turnout”.
