In early 2010, two Sikhs were kidnapped by Tehreek-e-Taliban, who demanded money in ransom–namely Jaspal Singh and Mastan Singh, who were well known Sikh businessmen settled in the Orakzai region of Pakistan. The Taliban has demanded Rs. 15 Million (US$187,000) from the Sikh and Hindu community in jizya tax. This tax is typically collected from non-Muslims.

Although the two minority communities agreed to pay the tax, the Taliban went against its words by beheading the two Sikhs. Ever since the killings, over 40 families settled in and close to Orakzai have been forced to relocate to other parts of Pakistan.

Mullah Fazlullah was also behind the attack on Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani school girl, in October 2012. Malala was shot in the head in an assassination attempt by Taliban men when she was en route to home on a school bus. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack alleging Malalas anti-Taliban statements to be the main reason.
