So-Called “Super Cop” KP Gill Irked by 1984 Shaheedi Museum at Darbar Sahib

:dateline:The war criminal and former cop KP Gill has now found another way to attack the Sikh Nation. In a statement issued shortly after lending support to Narinder Modi for organizing mass killings of Muslims in 2002, Gill has now stated that the recently erected “Yadgar Shahidan” in Amritsar is “just another excuse to generate funds”. The statement by Gill was made public by The Times of India.

Just a few days ago, KP Gill had stated that Narendra Modi could not be blamedfor the Gujarat riots of 2002 and reckoned that it took place as the Gujarat Police was divided on communal lines. Gill was shortly stationed as security adviser to Narendra Modi after the massacre. In his recently released biography named KPS Gill The Paramount Cop written by Rahul Chandan, Gill has shared much appreciation for the Gujarat Chief Minister. Gill has also attempted to absolve Indira Gandhi from liability of the attack on Sri Akal Takht Sahib. He has alleged that the then Prime Minister of India had no option but to carry on the attack on Darbar Sahib, killing tens of thousands of Sikhs across Punjab on a high holy day.

KP Gill has now slammed both Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee (SGPC) and the Damdami Taksal for constructing the 1984 memorial. The Times of India quoted his erroneous statement as, “There is an internal arrangement between the SGPC, the state government and Damdami Taksal to mop up funds. Otherwise what was the need to set up a memorial for so called martyrs inside the Golden Temple complex where people offer charity and largesse.

The Sikh nation as a whole had longed to set up a memorial in the memory of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and other martyrs who sacrificed their lives while fighting against the Indian Army invasion. To the dismay of Sikhs, the SGPC took a long time to grant the wish of the international Sikh community. It continued to delay the construction even after passing a resolution in its general house to build the memorial.

After much criticism by BJP and RSS who have close ties with the Akali Dal (Badal), the SGPC finally gave in to increasing pressure by the Sikh community and formed a committee to move ahead with the construction. Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma of Damdami Taksal (Mehta) was handed over Kar Sewa of the memorial. At the time of its inauguration, a section of media bashed references to Sikh martyrs on the plaque installed over the entry of the memorial. Hindu fundamentalists demanded the removal of the references. Although SGPC initially expressed unease over the plan by Baba Harnam Singh to highlight the names of martyrs, after positive pressure from Sikh Sangat, it finally gave up.

Months after the inauguration, the demand to remove the plaque has finally ceased. It is perhaps for this reason that KP Gill has brought up the case once again.
