:dateline:The Punjabi American community expressed its concern over the daily seizure of illegal drugs in Punjab worth tens of millions of rupees for which reason every third of youth is addicted to drugs in Punjab. Disclosing this, Satnam Singh Chahal, executive director of North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) said that due to heavy consumption of drugs, Punjab is moving towards a slow death.
Chahals remark came soon after the recovery of synthetic drugs worth more than Rs. 1 billion from an inter-state gang of drug smugglers by the Rajpura police. Chahal said in a scathing remark against the political establishment in Punjab that political competition in the state is not robust enough for good governance.
“Corruption is the single biggest barrier for growth in Punjab and to stop supply of illegal drugs.”
In the absence of political competition to deliver the goods, parties don’t feel threatened of being thrown out of power in case they don’t perform better Chahal remarked. He also said that if things are not rectified soon, the only possibility left for Punjab would be “slow death.” The need of the hour was to take all necessary measures to stop the supply of illegal drugs throughout the Punjab in order to save the people of Punjab added Chahal
