Police have arrested 28-year-old Kevin Moore of Elkhart in connection with the shooting.
People continue to drop off items at the memorial outside the market. There are flowers, balloons, candles and stuffed animals lined along the storefront and many people aren’t surprised because they say the two victims were well known and loved.
Tiffany Moran says, “He had a smile on his face. the biggest, prettiest smile and that’s what i’m going to miss the most.” She is still shocked and can’t believe Pawan Singh and Jagtar Bhatti are dead. She used to be homeless and says the men would give her food to eat when she didn’t have the money to buy it. Moran says, “They were one of a kind people. More than one of a kind people. they had hearts of gold. They were the type of people they would take their shirt off their back for you.”
Messages from the community cover the outside walls of the store. On Saturday a group of teenagers stopped by to write something to the victims.
People have written things like “lost but never forgotten” and “I love you.You will be missed.”
Miketa Roberts says, “I miss him so much and he’s always going to be remembered. Never be forgotten most definitely and he was good to the community and I’m going to miss him so much.”
The two victims were shot and killed inside the market which is at the corner ofMiddleburyand Madison Streets in Elkhart. Police say it happened around 9:30 Thursday morning. Dozens of people who live nearby cried, prayed and consoled one another as police investigated the scene.
The store is back open nowbut some people say the neighborhood will never be the same without Bhatti and Singh. Miketa Roberts says the men were very giving and looked out for people in the neighborhood.
She says “He would give mothers free diapers for like their kids, you know, anything they needed he’d help them out.” The visitation for the victims was Saturday.
William Sinclair who lives above the market tells me the two men will be flown back to India to be cremated. Police originally said they were looking for two or more suspects before they announced they had arrested Moore.
