FATEHGARH SAHIB, Punjab—Issuing a press statement, S. Simranjit Singh Mann of Shiromani Akali Dal (A) decried the attack on the chief of the Namdhari sect.  Thakur Uday Namdhari was attacked by a follower of breakaway Namdharis earlier this week.  The Namdhari chief survived the attack with some injuries to his nose, the attacker Harjit Toor was arrested on the spot.  Apparently the English police have carried out two more arrests after questioning Toor.

S. Mann expressed concern over the growing acts of violence within the Namdhari community and asked them to reunite with the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib Ji.  S. Mann stated that Baba Raam Singh, the alleged founder of the Namdhari sect, never claimed to be a Guru and had full faith in the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib Ji.  He alleged that it was after the exile of Baba Raam Singh that the Namdhari sect declared its own human Gurus, contrary to the beliefs of the Sikh religion.

The SAD A President said that he had appealed to both rival groups in the past, asking them to unite with the mainstream Sikh community by taking amrit.  While mistakenly referring to the namdharis as a part of the Sikh community, S. Mann further stated that such acts of violence also leave an impact on the Sikhs.
