Various shops and other businesses remained closed as part of the protest.
The protest has been launched as local residents want to use the Gurdwara land to build a market and bus station. The site for construction was however leased for Gurdwara purposes back in 2010 by the Sukhmani Society.
Since then, there have been efforts to construct a gurdwara on the 1 acre plot but due to continued issues with local political parties, so far there has been no progress.
In 2011, the seva society had appealed to local residents to allow the construction as the Gurdwara would provide free education, hospital and meals to the poor inPudhucherry. The Lt-Governor at that time had appealed to locals to not protest the Gurdwara construction.
