NEW DELHI—The President of SAD Delhi, Paramjit Sarna has announced that he is being wrongfully implicated in false propaganda regarding the construction of the 1984 Genocide Memorial in New Delhi. He has clarified that he is against the construction of the memorial in Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib complex as it would affect the spirituality of the place.
“The yadgar can be constructed in any other place and I, myself, would contribute towards it,” he said. Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib symbolizes the sacrifice made by Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji for the sake of religion and it would be inappropriate to make the memorial within the Gurdwara according to him.
Targeting members of the DSGMC—and accusing them of working in association with the right wing Hindu BJP—he alleged that they had not made any efforts to provide relief to genocide victims of 1984. He alleged that Punjab CM Parkash Badal and Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal deliberately raised the issues of 1984 near upcoming elections to gather sympathy votes.
Sarna was summoned to appear before Akal Takht Sahib on 17 June for filing a petition in Delhi High Court against the construction of the memorial. Despite having recieved the verbal communication, Sarna failed to present himself, alleging prior commitments as the main reason. Paramjit Sarna is a staunch support of the Congress party and has close ties to many notorious leaders such as Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler.
