NEW DELHI—A large number of people, including victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh [genocide], congregated outside the residence of Paramjit Singh Sarna, the former president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), to protest against his decision to move the Delhi High Court for halting the construction work of the 1984 Sikh genocide memorial being built at the Gurdwara Rakabganj Sahib Complex.
Ring Road blocked
Protestors led by Nirpreet Kaur, a victim of 1984 [pogroms], blocked Ring Road near Mr. Sarna’s Punjabi Bagh residence for about an hour and also burnt his effigy. Slogans were raised against Mr. Sarna for his “anti panth activities”.
A number of protestors were injured in a scuffle with the police when they tried to stop them from blocking Ring Road. The DSGMC led by president Manjit Singh GK had proposed to build a 1984 Sikh genocide memorial in the Gudwara Rakabganj Sahib Complex and a foundation stone was also laid on June 12 by head priests of the Sikhs.
“A balm on wounds”
Referring to the need for a memorial, Nirpreet Kaur said: “It would act as a balm on the wounds of Sikhs suffering since 1984 and also serve to remind the future generations about the injustice done by the Congress Government.”
