Former SGPC Member Writes to Akal Takhat on Sikh Genocide Memorial

Manjit_Singh_CalcuttaNEW DELHIā€”The former secretary of Shiromani Committee Sardar Manjeet Singh Calcutta has written a letter to appointed Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh terming the laying of a foundation stone for the 1984 Memorial in Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib, as an objectionable undertaking against the tenets of Sikhism. In his letter he has opposed the move which, according to him, is in complete defiance of Sikh principles and traditions.

Quoting the author of Mahan Kosh, Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha in his letter, he has written that he supported his views of a Gurdwara being a place for Sikh sangat with only the parkash of Guru Granth Sahib and a place where Gurbani Path, Kirtan and Ardas are performed and not an individual body owned by some committee.

He said that it is everyone’s heartfelt desire that the memorials should be made to commemorate the martyrs and give them their deserved respect but they should be made according to Sikh principles and code of conduct. In his letter he expressed his views of making a memorial in a separately selected place only for the sole purpose and not in an already established Gurdwara.

He has appealed to the Akal Takht to make decisions keeping in mind the interests of the entire panth and not under the influence of political leaders.
