NEW DELHI—The medical board constituted by the Union Government for the examination of Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar has declared him to be mentally unsound in their reports. The reports are expected to be sent for Home Ministry for review this coming week. The three member team of doctors led Dr. SK Khandelwal have revealed that Prof. Bhullar is suffering from severe depression with suicidal tendencies.
Professor Bhullar has been undergoing treatment for the last two years in a hospital based in Delhi but his condition has not shown any significant improvement since then.
Prof Bhullar is facing the death sentence for his involvement in the 1993 bomb blasts case whereas the jail manual clearly states that the the death row convict has to be declared physically and mentally sound before the death sentence is carried out. With his debilitated medical condition it is highly inappropriate to carry out the death sentence.
The various Sikh organizations are making efforts for the release of Prof Bhullar on humanitarian grounds.
