Is CBI considering to appeal against Sajjan Kumar’s acquittal after growing fear of increasing protests?

NEW DELHI—Although in past, the CBI has been blamed of carrying a bias in anti-Sikh pogrom cases, the agency has alleged that it might appeal against the acquittal of Sajjan Kumar in the Delhi High Court.  Sajjan Kumar was held responsible for anti-Sikh action in enticing a mob in Delhi which led to the killing of 5 Sikhs.

Kumar, a former member of Lok Sabha is still undergoing trial in a 1984 riot case and was denied the Congress ticket in 2009 general elections.  He was granted “closure report” action in a third case against him due to lack of sufficient evidence.

However, on April 30th the session judge JR Aryan announced his decision in favor of Sajjan Kumar leading to wide spread protests by Sikhs of Delhi and Punjab.

Sources from CBI have informed that on analysis of the case, strong grounds have been found on the basis of which they will challenge the acquittal of Sajjan Kumar in the Delhi High Court.  They will approach the Law ministry to further proceed the case to confront the session courts verdict.

Five other leaders including Balwan Khokhar, Mahindra Yadav, Kishan Khokhar, Girdhari Lal and Captain Bhagmal have been declared guilty by the court due to their involvement in 1984 riot cases.

The statement by CBI has come midst of growing fear from the protests across India.  Sikh Sangat should remain on the watch as the CBI in past played with sentiments of the Sikh community in various cases.
