NDP Leader Tom Mulcair Writes to Stephen Harper on matter of Prof. Bhullar’s Execution

VANCOUVER, BC, Canada—Thomas Mulcair, the Leader of the Official Opposition and Canada’s NDP has asked the Canadian Prime Minister to look into the matter of Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar with “great urgency”.  The letter by NDP leader comes after Prof. Bhullar was wrongfully sentenced by the Supreme Court of India.  Prof. Bhullar faces imminent threat of execution.

As per an email correspondence by Amneet Singh, Press Secretary of the NDP, “Jack Layton was quite vocal on matters of social justice and human rights, and we are proud to carry on this principled stance with Tom Mulcair.”  Jack Layton, former leader of the Official Opposition also led the NDP from 2003 to 2011.  Layton sympathized with the Sikh community issues and had issued a press statement in 2010 condemning the attack on Sri Harmandir Sahib.

In the letter, Tom Mulcair states that wife of Prof. Bhullar as a Canadian citizen expects the Canadian Government to bring attention to the situation regarding her husband.  Mulcair further asked Harper to press India to abolish death penalty.

Sikh Community extends its appreciation to the NDP for standing up for human rights issues.
