Giani Pinderpal Singh and Bhai Harjinder Singh Receive Honour from Akal Takhat Sahib

—Giani Pinderpal Singh Ji, kathavachak was honoured by Sri Akaal Takht Sahib and given the title of ‘Bhai Sahib’ and Bhai Harjinder Singh Ji, kirtani, from Sri Nagar was bestowed with title of ‘Shiromani Ragi’.  The news was rejoiced by Sikhs worldwide as both personalities have served the Sikh Nation with kirtan and katha seva for decades.  Both Giani Pinderpal Singh and Bhai Harjinder Singh have toured Punjab and worldwide countries extensively to do parchaar of Gurbani and Gursikhi.

Bhai Pinderpal Singh Ji was born in Haryana but came to the lime light in Ludhiana when he started doing katha there on a daily basis.  He is a learned Sikh scholar and easily quotes from Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Bhai Gurdas Ji’s vaars and kabits, Sri Dasam Granth Sahib and Bhai Nand Lal Ji’s ghazals.  He often quotes life stories of various Gursikhs, especially Dr. Bhai Veer Singh Ji.  The title of “Bhai Sahib” has been bestowed to other Gursikhs in the past.  Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh of Narangwal received this title from all Takhts of the Khalsa Panth.

Bhai Harjinder Singh Ji ‘Sri Nagar Wale’ has also served the Sikh community by travelling through different parts of India and Punjab and many countries worldwide.  Bhai Sahib is a native of Sri Nagar and just like Bhai Pinderpal Singh, he came to the limelight when he started doing kirtan seva in Ludhiana.  At that time he used to do kirtan along with his younger brother – Bhai Maninder Singh.  Bhai Harjinder Singh’s son now accompanies him as the side kirtani.  Bhai Harjinder Singh received blessings of Sant Kartar Singh Ji Bhindrawale in 1975 and has been doing kirtan since that time.  The title of “Shiromani Ragi” was initially bestowed to Bhai Balbir Singh Ji who is well versed in Gurmat Sangat and classical raags.  Unlike Bhai Balbir Singh Ji who does kirtan based on raags specified in Gurbani, Bhai Harjinder Singh uses melodies which are simpler.

Sri Akal Takht Sahib has done a good deed at recognizing the seva done by both Gursikhs.  Along with honouring them for seva done for the Panth, the Takht Sahib needs to ensure that there is an abundance of kirtanis and the katha vachaks in the Panth.  It needs to a play a greater role in making such students of Gurbani and Gurmat sangeet are given proper attention and resources.
