Amritsar Sahib—The faction of Damdami Taksal under the control of Baba Harnaam Singh “Dhumma” has prepared a Saroop (Volume) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji where Gurbani has been altered. It is widely known that there is a difference in opinion over the length of the mool mantar in the Sikh Community. However, the recent act by Baba Dhumma’s faction has no precedent and it appears they are now firm in pushing their beliefs through any possible means, including making changes to Gurbani.
In ancient Saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, as well as Saroops printed by the SGPC, the manglacharan (invocation) “Gur Prasaad ||” (“ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥”) comes before “|| Jap ||” (॥ਜਪੁ॥), which is the title of the first Bani in Guru Granth Sahib Ji. It is identified as the title of the Bani by the double ddandian (॥) on both sides of the title. After this comes “Aad Sach…” which is a Mangla-charan (invocation). Put together from the beginning, some regard this as the full Mool Mantar, while others regard the full Mool Mantar up to “Gur Prasaad ||” (“ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥”), marked with two sets of double ddandian (॥) . All groups agree that the first stanza (pauri) of the Bani named ‘Jap’ (which is known as ‘Japji’) is “sochai soch na hove’ee je sochee lakh vaar ||” (“ਸੋਚੈ ਸੋਚਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਸੋਚੀ ਲਖ ਵਾਰ ॥”).

However, in the saroops published by the Damdami Taksal (Dhumma), recently, the double ddandian (“॥”) is missing after “Gur Prasaad ||” (“ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥”). In the new printings, “Jap || Aad Sach” (“ਜਪੁ॥ ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ”) comes next. Furthermore, whereas other Saroops have up to “Gur Prasaad ||” (“ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥”) emphasised either through a different font, colour or larger font size, the Damdami Taksal (Dhumma) version of Saroops puts the emphasis up to “Nanak Hosi Bhi Sach ||1||” (“ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥1॥”). From this, it seems a clear attempt to establish that “Jap|| Aad Sach…” (“ਜਪੁ॥ ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ…”) is part of the Mool Mantar.

Editor’s Note: While Sikh24 does not aim to take a position on the length of the mool mantar, the central concern to many Sikhs is the changing of Gurbani grammar and formatting that has been set for centuries. In the past, The Damdami Taksal has firmly stood against any changes to Gurbani, however it seems that just to promote their own ideology, the new Jathedar of Taksaal has taken a different stance. If Taksal continues on this path, it could create precedence in the wider Panth and have unimaginable consequences in the future.
Sorry to know that dumha group of taksal is making those changes . I strongly believe that no one has a right to make changes in SGGS ji. Today,s changes done by any one will be future distructions.there is no doubt that Dhuma group has become RSS asset since they preached RSS members GURBANI in chowk Mehta . And in return they were spouse to get training in warfare which they got. Every gursikh should protest against those changes regardless of their group or Jatha. With regrets
For those youth who dont understand and to prevent further loss of the amount that can Become sikhs this issue should be cleared ASAP and LIVE. Let us hope that it doesnt ever come to the pont where even the youth that are thinking of coming back to Sikhi stray away for good because of the confusion and two sided answers from the only credible sources we have as sikhs. We put our faith and High regard in the Hands of the Taksal and Akal Takht to oversee the issues and crackdown hard to fix any wrong doings. But to see them letting others get away with things such as Attacking our Bani is decieving. I say we should start a petition or a letter to both sides as a Plea from sangat to keep Guru Ji’s TRUE Rehat in place for futures to come. STOP THE BICKERING AND STICK TO THE TRUTH AND UNITE AS ONE.

Firstly, Raagmala. Obviously you have not done extensive research on this topic otherwise you would not write such nonsense. It is a proven fact that there are numerous puraatan saroops without Raagmala. Read the book “Munduwani” which has scanned photos. The book has a preface written by the then Akal Takht Jathedar, Singh Sahib Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti. Then there are numerous puraatan Saroops with Raagmala but they also include other discredited Banis like Ratanmala etc. Then you have some saroops with just Raagmala at the end. The Panth decided (not any jathebandi) that include Raagmala in all printed Saroops from now on to keep everyone happy but you don’t have to read it if you don’t want to. It was not read at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, even during when Sant Jarnail Singh Ji was staying there. So there is no issue about Sikh24 making an article on Raagmala.
As for Bhagat Bani. Who in the Panth at this moment of time has denounced Bhagat Bani? Can you please provide evidence to back such claims. If true, then I am sure Sikh24 guys would expose such attempts.
Lastly, Dasam Bani. Sikh24 has done articles on Dasam Bani. Just google it. Sri Akal Takht Sahib has asked for public debate on Dasam Granth to stop.
End of day Sri Akal Takht Sahib has clearly said that NO ONE can print senchian, gutke or saroops without their and SGPC’s permission as per Hukamnama issued in 1998. And also you have to use the Gurbani formatting as per SGPC. Now who gave Dhumma the right to go and print senchian or anything else which changes layout of Gurbani and goes against Panth. No one has printed Saroops without Raagmala so that is not an issue!

Thank you for clarifiny that one does not have to read every thing that is included in a Gutka .My worry is that some Jathas are imposing on young followers as norm. That in my mind is misleading the Future Generation.

An authoritative answer will be welcomed. I am keen in taking “AMRIT” but have some difficulty with this. Taksal promotors are insisting on it.

Eating meat, fish and eggs are forbidden in the Sikh religion according to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
The Akal Takht Sikh Rehit Maryada states eating “Kutthaa” is the Bajjar Kurehat which means that if one eats “Kutthaa”, he or she is expelled from the Panth, no longer a Sikh and is only forgiven and considered a Sikh again after going Pesh and receiving Amrit again from Panj Pyaare.
During the time that the Sikh Rehit Maryada was being prepared, a large number of Sikhs believed in eating meat, although all the saints and spiritual gurmukhs believed it was against Sikhi. Great Gursikhs like Bhai Sahib Vir Singh, Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh, Baba Gurbachan Singh Bhindran Wale, Baba Attar Singh Mastuana Wale etc were all against meat, however apart from Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee, all the others did not make their views on meat as public.
The SGPC translates “Kutthaa” as “Halaal” in the footnote. Even if you believe that, 1) There is no Hukam or permission written anywhere in the Maryada to eat Jhatka. All it says is that eating Kutthaa (for argument sake lets say “Halal”) will mean that you are removed from the Sikh religion – but it doesn’t say eat meat. 2) Where it is written how to make Degh etc, there is no guidance on how to slaughter meat in accordance to Gurmat if it is allowed.
Sikh Rehit Maryada is a supplementary document to the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The Sikh Rehit Maryada is open to change if and when the Panth decides.

It is sad to see how Damdami Taksal Jatha Bhindran has been over the years losing its Panthic credability and respect. A group that was the on the forefront of the Panth for educating people on Gurbani and giving martyrdom for the Panth has now become a puppet of the Badal Government along with the rest of Sant Samaaj and helping the enemies of the Panth.
