:dateline:Elections are currently underway at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, BC, Canada. The election date has been scheduled for December 16, 2012 and there are three slates vying to be the committee of the Gurdwara Sahib. One of the slates running in the election is led by Rajinder Singh Dhaliwal, the current treasurer of the Gurdwara Sahib. Rajinder Singh’s slate is aligned with the current committee that has brought remarkable change to the Gurdwara Sahib. The outgoing committee came in after 13 years of control by Balwant Gill, who had been excommunicated from the Sikh panth for his violations of Maryada.
The other two slates are running under the “Moderate Sikh” banner. Not much is currently known about either slate. One of the slates may choose to withdraw before the end of the week, when there is a nomination withdrawal deadline for the election. Both “Moderate Sikh” slates are associated with excommunicated individuals and bringing back tables and chairs into the Gurdwara Sahib langar hall is their main priority.
Some observers are lamenting the lack of youth involvement in the slate led by Rajinder Singh. However, Rajinder Singh has promised that the Gurdwara Sahib will be as focused on youth programs and other engagement with the youth as the outgoing committee.
