Guest Review: Ajay Devgan’s “Son of Sardar” Movie

Thanks to the much hype raised by media, I was inclined to watch “Son of Sardar” the day it was released.  I already expected it to be a totally commercial ‘masala’ movie with no intention to spread the message of Sikhi or to show its real essence.  I knew the idea would be to cash the money from North Indians by making the movie on Sikhs.

I had one expectation though – that it would be an entertaining movie. To my shock it turned out to be the most boring movie I ever saw.  The script is poorly written, along with bad direction.  Like all Masala movies, it has very exaggerated action scenes that really don’t make you laugh.

I have always thought of Ajay Devgan as a very sensible artist who does his homework before acting in any movie.  I was especially impressed by his work in “The Legend of Bhagat Singh”. But in this movie he totally failed me. The dialogs are very poorly written and even though they have used a lot of Punjabi words they seem deprived of both Hindi and Punjabi.

Talking about the movie offending the Sikhs – I personally did not find it offensive and although the movie does not represent the Sikh families in Punjab in true essence, it did not make fun of them either.  Sanjay Datt’s family is shown as a Jatt Sikh family with mixed Hindu practices.  For example, when Sanjay Datt is about to be married, they have a Pandit perform the ceremonies but when they go for his sisters engagement, they go to a Gurdwara. This happens in very few families in Punjab but it does happen.

Ajay Devgan has thrown some good dialogues in the movie about who Sikhs are but then those dialogues are true on “Singhs” while he himself has a trimmed beard in the movie. In the start of the movie, he stops a Sikh guy from smoking and tells him not to smoke which I believed was a good message.  He has also given very high importance to the turban of a Sikh.

Editor’s note: This review was submitted by a guest writer addressing the much debated movie – “Son of Sardar”, released earlier this month.  The author had no intention to review this movie as religious, rather he watched it solely for entertainment purposes. We invite our fellow readers to take an active part in reviewing media (movies, books, etc.) that depict Sikhs in any way.  It is our responsibility to make sure the image of Sikhs carried by World Media is positive and doesn’t carry any false representation.

  1. Here is my view; we are tired of romance movie now time is for comedy. I’m not Indian or Asian but I’m Hindi movie lover. The truth is I love Ajay Davgan Son of Sardar movie is the best movie ever according to 2012. but I would like to tell few word the people who kiss ass, if you don’t like the person or the movie just hold it to yourself because you are going to be influence to the other audience who would like to watch their hero star on screen. Just shut up and watch don’t give negative comment on movies just because to support your hero, you don’t have to scrod the others life.
